Gettin’ Quilty With It…

+ What size quilts can I send you?

The largest width I can accept is 120” - in other words, most king size quilts. As far as the smallest, I can quilt your table runners and baby quilts. Due to the time spent/labor of receiving, loading, and shipping, there is a $50 minimum order (excluding batting).

+ I’m a newer quilter and my quilts aren’t show quality. Is it still ok if I send it to you for quilting?

Of course! We’ve all been new at quilting at some point. Pieced Pineapple Studio was founded on the concept of empowering quilters of all skill levels and helping each other grow. Once I receive your quilt, I’ll measure and inspect it. If I’m unsure about anything I’ll let you know immediately via phone or email. If you’re interested in tips for growth, I’m more than happy to share tips to improve upon for your next quilt. It’s my goal to help you have the best quilts possible.

+ Will the type of fabric I used change the result of the quilting?

The short answer - yes.

Firstly, always use the highest quality fabric your budget can afford. I LOVE a great sale, but I also know it’s best to invest in high-quality fabric for my quilts. The 60% off coupon to the big box craft store is soo enticing - but instead of fabric, I’ll buy storage items, basic notions, or reputable threads. Check out sale and clearance sections at your local quilt shop or favorite online quilt stores.

Secondly, as modern quilters, we love to push the boundaries and try alternate materials. When you’re sending in your quilt, disclose any alternate fabrics used (IE, flannel, rayon, linen, etc) and I’ll pay special attention when your quilt is received. I’ll be very upfront if it is a textile I haven’t quilted before, but I’m always up for a challenge and if you’re game. If you’re one of my quilty rule-breakers, let’s schedule a video call to discuss possibilities prior to shipment.

Lastly, it is your quilt! Pieced Pineapple Studio is your quilting ally. I’ll give you my best opinion and advice, but I ultimately want to bring your concept to life!

+ I didn’t see the pattern I’m envisioning in your design library. Do You offer any other patterns?

Sure! I have an extensive library of patterns, but there are more digital E2E patterns available online than there are colors of nail polish! If you find something you loved on Instagram or Pinterest, send me a link and I’ll look for it or something similar. If you find a pattern from one of the below sources you’d like to use, I’m more than happy to split the cost with you.

+ I have a specific direction in mind for my quilt top and back. How do I let you know which side is the top?

If you have a preferred directionality for your quilt top and back, please put a safety pin near the center of the top edges of your back and top. This way I can ensure they are loaded onto the frame in your desired direction. But don’t worry, I’ll send you photos if I have any questions.

+ Can my quilt back be pieced?

Yes! A pieced back can be a great way to use up scraps and leftover fabrics. Unlike when quilting on a sit-down machine, I can only try to align the vertical center of the quilt top and back. Due to the loading process, I’ll center the top of the backing and quilt top but cannot guarantee the top to be centered between the top and bottom of the backing. Since your backing must have an additional 4” on all sides of your quilt, it is best not to put any special blocks or labels along the edges of your backings. I also prefer to load the quilt backing with the fabric selvage at the top and the bottom. This provides a more structurally sound backing during the quilting process. For this reason, horizontal seams are preferred, but vertical seams will work as well. For best results, please press your all seams open on your backing for a smoother look.

+ Can I send extra-wide fabric to use for my backing?

While I love a great pieced back, some of my favorite quilt backs aren’t pieced at all!. The extra-wide 108” fabrics work great for quilts under 100” - no piecing needed! Also, feel free to ship extra wide backing directly from your preferred online source to me and just let me know the tracking information. However I can help on costs - I'm in!

Pricing

+ What is included in your cost per square inch pricing?

The following services are included in the square inch price:

  • 30-minute consultation (by video, phone, or in-person) to select a design, thread, and batting.
    • Each additional 30 minutes is $25. But don’t worry - I’m sure we can figure it out in 30 minutes!
  • Time to load the longarm frame and square up your backing, batting, and top as much as possible.
  • Bobbin changes. I will not charge you for each bobbin change.
  • Time spent stitching the quilt, knotting and burying threads as needed.
  • Trimming your quilt after stitching is completed.
  • Regular photo updates via email or text.

The following items are in addition to the square inch price:

  • Consultation beyond the initial 30 minutes (see above).
  • One thread color is standard at $8/quilt. Each additional thread color is $5 each.
  • Batting (dependent upon quilt size and batting type selected).
  • Finishing services - aka Binding.
  • Return shipping (This is generally around $14-$20 and includes $50 insurance)
  • Sales Tax (I knoooooow. I’m sorry! Uncle Sam needs his share too and I prefer to be on the IRS’s good side!)

+ I think I saw a bunch of $$ per square inch prices on your services page. Translation, please?!

While I’m working on an automated form for you to complete that does the math for us, we can handle this in the meantime.

Let’s say your quilt top is 50” wide x 65” long. Multiply these numbers to get the square inches.

  • 50" x 60" = 3,250 sq inches

Now multiple the square inches by the square inch rate of your desired pattern/density. We’ll say it’s $0.03 for this example.

  • 3,250 x .030 = $97.50. Whoa - definitely worth it to finish those quilts before Christmas!

Oh, that ginormous quilt you’ve been working on for your bed the last two years? (I’ve put that mega quilt through my tiny DSM - never again, thank you very much!)

  • 100” x 100” = 10,000
  • 10,00 x 0.020 = $200 - Let’s get it finished and into use!

+ Ok, so I figured out the square inch cost for my quilt - are there hidden fees?

I hope not! It is my goal to be as upfront with you about costs as possible.

After we establish a cost per square inch, we just need to add thread and batting. Batting will be dependent upon the size of your quilt (plus 4” on ALL sides), and one thread color is standard at $8/quilt. Each additional color change beyond this is $5 each.

If there are any surprises (like holes in your quilt that need mending or excessive pet hair that needs to be removed upon receipt), I will let you know as soon as possible. I want you to have the best quilt possible so I’ll let you know about any concerns or surprises I find along the way - as soon as I find them.

+ Do you charge extra to trim up my quilt?

Trimming is an included service. I consider it equal to having your hair styled after a haircut - it leaves your quilt looking polished and photo-ready. As a standard, I will only be trimming off the excess batting and backing and square the corners only - this is not to be confused with squaring up your quilt. I’d prefer to let you chose how much to trim off when squaring up, though I’m totally ok taking this on - upon request only. However, if you purchase binding services, I will square up the quilt prior to binding unless requested otherwise.

Usable batting and backing fabric larger than 2.5" will be returned with your quilt.

+ I'm on a bit of a budget. Do I have to pay for everything up front?

Don't worry - I totally understand! Here's how payments break down:

  • To place your order, fill out the form and purchase your batting (remember it needs to have an additional 4" on EACH side). Consider this your deposit and holding your place in line.
  • Next, you'll need to pay for shipping and ship the quilt top and backing to the address provided.
  • Once your quilt top/backing have arrived at the studio and I've processed your order form, you will receive an estimate of costs.
  • After you return a signed copy of the estimate (email please!), the quilting can begin!
  • Finally, your quilting is completed! I'll package your quilt up, establish shipping costs to include on your final invoice, and send you the final balance for payment. Once paid, your quilt will be shipped out the next business day!

Studio Details

Pieced Pineapple Studio, LLC is located in Columbia, SC (in the lower-floor of my home). It is a smoke-free, cat-free, child-free home. We do have a silken windhound that owns our beds and is the CCO (chief cuddling officer) of my personal quilts. As an allergy-suffering household, I want to be very upfront about having a dog in the home. Please let me know if you have any questions.

+ What type of longarm do you use?

I have a 22" Innova Longarm on an 11' frame in the studio. He, Luther the Longarm, is a computerized machine with a digital stitch regulator (this means every stitch will be perfectly precise).

+ Your machine is computerized?! What Does that mean?

There is a dedicated computer connected to the side of my longarm frame that automates the majority of the stitching on your quilt. I use the machine and computer to design the quilting pattern, scale, and placement to best compliment your quilt. Once the design has been established, it's time to get stitching! This is when the computer connects to the motor and takes over the sew head to stitch your quilt. Don't worry, I'm there with your quilt the whole time to ensure the best results possible.

+ Who will be working on my quilt?

Currently, I’m not only the Founder but the Go-to-Gal for all things Pieced Pineapple Studio. I’ll be handling your quilt from check-in to departure. If you have any questions along the way - I’m just a call away.

Shipping & Delivery

+ I can't wait to start our quilting collaboration! How do I ship my quilt to you?

Yay - I'm so excited too! Pieced Pineapple Studio is based out of my home in Columbia, SC, USA. I will gladly accept quilts by mail from across the country. Please provide tracking information via email so I can carefully monitor all shipments and ensure there is someone available to receive your quilt top and backing.
Please inquire about options to ship extra-wide backing fabrics directly to the studio from online sources.

+ How do I package my quilt top, binding, and backing to ship to you?

I have a few steps I recommend here.

  1. Place safety pins at the top of your backing and top if there is a specific way you want me to load it on the frame (IE a directional print that you want facing up). If you are sending multiple quilts, please note which backings belong to which top.
  2. Include a paper with your name, phone number, and email.
  3. Send your materials enclosed in a plastic bag to protect against any possible moisture during transit or in case the box gets damaged. Place this sealed plastic bag inside a strong cardboard box and tape securely shut.
  4. Lastly, clearly label the box and it's ready to go!

+ How does my quilt get returned to me?

Your quilt is finished - woohoo! I can't wait for you to receive it. I will carefully package it up as I described in the question above and return it to you via USPS Priority Mail. I'll ship using the most economical rate available through Priority Mail with the $50 included insurance through USPS.

I will include the exact shipping costs on your final invoice. All invoices must be paid prior to shipment. If you would prefer an alternate shipping service (FedEx or UPS), this can be arranged for an additional charge. Faster delivery and/or additional insurance are also available upon request during intake.

Once your quilt is prepared for its journey back to you, I will provide you with the tracking number so you can monitor its progress.

+ I live in South Carolina. Do I have to ship my quilt to you still?
